It’s important to note that while many of the listed tips are generally considered safe for most people when used as directed, they should not be used as a substitute for medical care. It’s always best to consult with a healthcare provider before taking any new supplement or trying a new home remedy.

Jane:  We swear on Elderberry syrup. We give it to our son once in a while and when we know there is something going around the daycare; knock on wood, he does not get sick very often.

What is Elderberry syrup and what is it used for?

Elderberry syrup is a liquid extract made from the dark berries of the elderberry plant. It is used to treat a variety of medical issues. It is believed to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiviral properties.

Elderberry syrup is commonly used to help boost the immune system in turn preventing colds and the flu. People often use it to help relieve symptoms of the common cold and flu, such as sore throat, cough, and fever. Some studies also suggest that it may potentially shorten the duration of cold and flu symptoms.

Katrina:  We apply vaporub under the feet/chest/back, and seems to work

What does rubbing Vicks vaporub under the feet chest and back do?

Vicks VapoRub is a popular, over-the-counter medicated cream that is primarily used to relieve cough and cold symptoms. It is typically applied to the chest, back, and throat to help relieve congestion and cough. It is important to note that it should not be used on broken or irritated skin, and should be kept away from the eyes and nose. The menthol in it is said to have a cooling effect, which can help to relieve chest congestion and coughing. Some people also apply it under their nose to help relieve stuffy nose (plus it smells great)

Unfortunately, there is little scientific evidence to support these claims. Be sure that if you use it on the feet place some thick socks overtop to hold it in place and not slip during midnight trips to the bathroom.

Elisabeth: We also use vaporub on our kids feet and we find it helps them get better quicker. And as soon as we see our kids getting sick my husband and I will often ingest oregano oil (either a few drops in our tea or in a capsule form) to try and avoid catching what they have.

How does taking oregano oil help with cold and flu symptoms?

Oregano oil contains compounds such as carvacrol and thymol, which have been found to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Some people take oregano oil as a dietary supplement in order to boost their immune system and prevent colds and flu. Others (like Elisabeth) take it at the onset of cold and flu symptoms to help relieve symptoms such as sore throat, cough, congestion, and fever.

Some scientific evidence supports the use of oregano oil as a natural remedy for cold and flu symptoms. Studies have found that oregano oil may be effective against certain strains of bacteria and viruses that can cause respiratory infections. Additionally, it has been found to have an anti-inflammatory effect which can help to reduce symptoms like sore throat and coughing.

Oregano oil should be used with caution, as it can be toxic if taken in large doses. It should also be avoided by pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with bleeding disorders.

Alyssa: We are very big on smoothie Popsicles in our house. I do a fruit and veggie mix and add pre and probiotics. 70% of our immune system is in our gut! Also great to have on hand when they do get sick as it’s something easy and soothing to eat!

Is it true that 70% of our immune system is in our gut?

Yes !!! The gut is home to a large and diverse community of microorganisms, collectively known as the gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in supporting the gut’s immune system. In fact, about 70% of the immune system’s cells and tissues are found in the gut lining, including cells that produce antibodies and regulate the immune response.

Prebiotics and probiotics both play a role in supporting the gut’s immune system and overall health.

Channing:  We religiously rinse our kids noses twice a day with normal saline. 10ml each nostril when not sick morning and before bed. 20ml each nostril when sick (we can go up to 4-6x a day depending how sick they are!) Started when they were both 6 months old and now they are pros! We feel it kicks the sickness away faster and prevents them from getting super sick with all the germs going around at daycare!

What are the health benefits of rinsing your nose with saline?

Overall, rinsing the nose with saline solution is a simple, safe, and effective way to promote nasal and sinus health with many benefits, such as:

  1. Moisturizing the nasal passages relieves symptoms of dryness and crusting.
  2. Clearing out mucus, debris, and other irritants from the nasal passages.
  3. Relieving sinus symptoms of sinusitis, such as congestion, pressure, and pain.
  4. Reducing allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itching, and runny nose.
  5. Saline rinses can help to prevent the growth of bacteria and viruses in the nasal passages, reducing the risk of infections, including the common cold and flu.
