Managing Gastro: What to Do and When to Seek Medical Treatment
Managing Gastro: What to Do and When to Seek Medical Treatment

Gastroenteritis, or “gastro,” is a condition that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines, leading to symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and stomach pain. It is often caused by a virus, but can also be caused by bacteria or parasites.

If you are experiencing gastro, be sure you are getting enough fluids to prevent dehydration.

Adults can try drinking clear fluids, such as water or electrolyte solutions, and should avoid caffeine and alcohol. Soup broths and/or Jell-O can also help in maintaining hydration and can be easier to consume.

Children may be unable to drink large amounts of fluids, so offer small amounts of clear fluids, frequently. You can also try giving them ice chips or popsicles to help with hydration.

Solid food may be difficult to digest while you are experiencing gastro, so wait until your symptoms improve before introducing solids back into your diet. When reintroducing start with bland foods like dry toast.

Be sure to pay attention to the severity and duration of your symptoms. If you are experiencing severe stomach pain, have blood in your vomit or diarrhea, or have not had a wet diaper in over eight hours (for children), it is important to seek medical treatment.

In conclusion, it is important to ensure that you are getting enough fluids and to pay attention to the severity and duration of your symptoms. If your symptoms are severe or do not improve, it would be a good idea to go see a doctor.

As always, practice proper hand hygiene frequently to prevent the spread of gastro.
